We recently asked our neighbouring potter (Monique Wilson) to design some buttons for our raffia cushion covers. Although we are fond of our wooden buttons, something new and fresh and colourful is required. We began with three plain colours – a teal, mustard and bright red. These have worked well, but Monique decided to experiment with some more original and adventurous designs, using unglazed sections with a dab of glaze on them. We love the splodges and marbled effects, and think they add a new dimension to our cushions.
The raffia’s texture provides a good background to the button, as it has a certain strength to it, it is supports it well and the natural colours enhance the smooth or mottled ceramic.
