These are used extensively in home, corporate and hotel décor.  Curtaining is our core product, hand spun and woven mohair is something unique and special and has a highly individual and sophisticated look.  We began weaving mohair curtaining more than sixty years ago so are quite practised in it.

Raffia curtaining is a relatively new development – Wintergrass and Frosted Grass are our raffia curtaining fabrics.  These are textured and visceral fabrics – and naturally have an organic feel while being tough and performing well.

The hand made nature of the fabric gives it a unique look and edge; it is highly individual and combines a modern feel with an age-old manufacturing technique.

Coral Stephens undertakes commissions and is able to work closely with decorators to achieve customised colours, textures and patterns.  We specialise in carpets made from raffia, twine and cotton as well as mohair and stripped “rag” cotton, each item is made to our customers’ size and colour requirements.

We have an extensive archive of shades, patterns and combinations and can develop something completely new or revert to classic fabrics that remain in vogue.

Mohair blankets are woven in plain or striped designs, with or without texture.

We stock a wide variety of blankets in our shop and can make to order (although minimum quantities apply).

Being a natural fiber, mohair is an excellent insulator and is light making it ideal throw or knee rug.

Sizes:

Blankets may be customized to contain extra texture, thickness and pattern or use a specific combination of colours in prescribed measurements.

Mohair is hand spun and dyed and makes for a highly durable, stain resistant and beautiful looking rug.  They are made to last. Tufted carpets become silky and soft with age and can last fifty years or more.

Mohair is easy to care for (brush with a soft brush); it is a naturally stain resistant fabric and very soft underfoot.

All carpets are custom-made to order in consultation with decorator or owner.

A polycotton warp is used for strength and we generally weave on an ecru colour warp, but can use black, dark brown or a striped warp.

Ideal for Curtaining….
Mohair yarns is ideal for curtaining: it has a good weight but remains light, looks sophisticated, drapes well, has a silken sheen and luster which a synthetic fabric cannot achieve.  Whether dyed in a rich, plain colour or left in its natural chalk state – it performs beautifully.  It is also highly durable and being an organic fiber is an excellent insulator and will add depth and beauty to any room.
Hand spinning brings a subtle edge to the fabric as it creates a unique flow and feel which can never be replicated in any other way.

Customise….
Mohair is woven in a standard fine yarn, but different plies and thicknesses can be incorporated into the weave to create variations in texture.  Colour can be matched to suit a room scheme and pattern using one or several colours can be woven.

Care…
Curtaining should be made up by a reputable curtain maker and requires lining if in a light or sunny position.  Dry clean infrequently.  Already moth proofed.  We do not make up the curtains and can supply in cut lengths/drops or on a roll.

Wintergrass is natural raffia which has been stripped, combined with a strong polycotton  and woven on a thick warp to make curtain.

It is woven in panels and joined to achieve the correct final curtain height.  There are a variety of ways to join the panel,  a light crochet stitch, detailed loop or a machine stitch.

The edges are also finished with a neat blanket trim. It is made to order according to customers dimensions.

It has an outdoor, organic and tactile  feel and does not fade easily.  It is ideal for bush lodges and outdoor areas (although does need protection against the elements.)
