We are in Habitat’s Jan/Feb 2011 issue

The extraordinary home built at Leopard Creek, facing the Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park in Mpumulanga contains indigenous materials and incorporates highly original interior design.   “The interior reflects the surrounding bushveld in natural timber and overall bleached, faded grey and beige tones and the fabrics chosen echo this natural palette.   Interior and exterior areas synergise easily and while being rustic, the materials are subtly utilised, the result is appealingly simple yet aesthetic in its high quality finish and natural interior/exterior flow”.

We had great fun combining materials we had not used before (like towelling, t-shirt material, thick twine and string) and we plied them up and wove them into carpets, having first dyed them in beautiful shades of green, olive, mustard and greys.  All the rugs had fringes on the sides to add to the size, thickness and presence.  I love how the fringe on carpet that is placed on the deck echoes the marshy wetland of the river below it.

One of the bedrooms faces the river (which is a hive of activity for elephant, buffalo, hippo – like watching a live wildlife documentary from your bed), it is draped with one of our mixed weave blankets….and looks like the perfect place to begin a day in the bush….if you can get out of bed!
